Being Fulfilled

What fills your bucket?

I think it is so important to ensure you do things that bring you joy and happiness. Of course, one hopes each and every day brings us joy and happiness. It is the small things that can often do that. A friend and I were speaking, and she mentioned a new coffee shop opened near her and she was quite excited to have it so close by.

There is the third space. The "third space" is a concept that refers to a social environment separate from the two usual social environments of home (first space) and work (second space). It's a place where people can relax, enjoy themselves, and interact with others in a more informal setting. These festivals, for me, embody the essence of the third space — crucial for maintaining balance and connecting with those around us. They remind me of the importance of stepping out of my daily routines to find joy and fulfillment in shared experiences.

Here are some key aspects of a third space:

  • Relaxation and Social Interaction: It provides a relaxed atmosphere where people can unwind and engage with others. This could be a coffee shop, a park, a community center, or even a music festival.

  • Community and Connection: Third spaces often foster a sense of community and belonging, allowing people to connect with others outside their usual circles.

  • Balance and Well-being: Incorporating a third space into your routine can contribute to personal well-being by offering a balance between work and personal life.

These festivals serve as a perfect embodiment of the "third space" — a concept referring to a social setting that is neither your home nor workplace, where you can relax and connect with others.

Attending the Salmon Arm Blues Festival in 2025 was a highlight this summer. Despite missing it previously due to unforeseen circumstances, the festival proved to be worth the wait. It was a weekend filled with great music, delicious food, and the warmth of the sun. The added bonus was spending time with a cousin and her husband, which provided an opportunity to get to know them better. I always appreciate time with family and catching up. Connections, laughter, and shared moments made the festival truly unforgettable.

Edmonton Folk Festival, 2025

Another memorable event was attending a favourite festival — the Edmonton Folk Festival. This year, two friends attended for the first time, which was amazing. My friend who hosts us had recently moved, and seeing her enjoy her new space — which is such an amazing place — was wonderful. Rain or shine, the festival atmosphere brought a sense of fulfillment that is hard to replicate elsewhere.

Looking forward, I’m filled with great anticipation for a new festival in September with a friend. The prospect of discovering new artists and reliving performances of familiar ones promises to be four days well spent.

These festivals are more than just events; they are journeys that refresh and rejuvenate the spirit. They offer a break from the routine, an opportunity to connect with others, and a chance to align and adjust your inner self. The biggest challenge is how to prioritize must-see performances, which stage to be at when, and, as my friend always knows, which food trucks to eat at and for which meal.

Immerse yourself in the experience, be present, and enjoy the music and moments — as there is always so much happening at once.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where is your third space?

  • Do you interact with others?
